The Monroe Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization that was founded in 1976. The Society opened its museum in 1982 in Monroe’s original two-story City Hall building at 207 East Main Street. As well as a wide-ranging collection of local historical artifacts, the museum maintains a variety of local history resources available, with some restrictions, to society members and to the public. The society sponsors public programs for members and guests, hosts and provides the displays at the historic Shannahan Cabin during the annual Evergreen State Fair, and participates in many other community events and activities. New members are always welcome. We welcome donations of artifacts, photographs, documents, and information on Monroe-area history. Monetary donations are also very much appreciated. A 501(C)3 organization, all contributions are tax deductible. A board of trustees, made up of officers and trustees elected by the membership, meets at the museum the third Wednesday evening of each month. The public is welcome.
Our mission: “The Monroe Historical Society seeks to preserve and share the history of Monroe and to inspire an appreciation of its heritage.”
