Monroe Independence Day Celebration 1918 Monroe's 1918 Independence Day Celebration centered around the dedication of the community's new 155-foot flagpole on West Main Street at Madison Street. The country was at war and the event was marked by the presence of a contingent of U.S. Army Soldiers to the left of the donkey engine used to raise the new flagpole.
