Main Street in the Snow of 1916

Main Street in the Big Snow of 1916
Monroe Historical Society photo #1523

The heaviest snowfall on record for the Northwest fell in late January and early February 1916. Almost four weeks of freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall created accumulations of four to six feet, which brought most business and community activities to a standstill. Snow was piled even higher in the center of the street because of the shoveling of snow off of walks and roofs. Photo was taken looking northwest. The Savoy Hotel is the three-story building at the far left, and the Hotel Monroe is the two-story building just to the right of the second telephone pole from the right.
