Main Street 1904

Main Street, Monroe, in 1904 looking west from Woods Street
Monroe Historical Society photo #204

Vanasdlen's store, which was rebuilt after the 1901 fire, is the two-story building on the left at the southeast corner of Main and Ferry Streets, and the three-story building across Ferry Street from it is the Pearsall Hotel, which was also built after the 1901 fire that destroyed that entire block of buildings. Across Main Street from the Vanasdlen store is the two-story Washington Hotel on the northeast corner of Main and Ferry. The vacant lot between it and the lunchroom and bakery at far right is the site of Old City Hall, which was built in 1908.

The photo was taken looking down Main Street from the vicinity of Woods Street near the railroad tracks (from about point D on this detail of the 1910 platmap). The Vanasdlen's store is at point 1 on the platmap and on this 1907 birdseye view photo.
