Laying the cornerstone for Monroe Union High School in 1910 The cornerstone for the new Monroe Union High School was laid on Sept. 13, 1910, under the direction of the Masonic Grand Lodge. Information on the the back of one of the photos identifies Shannahan at left in back, Judge Oliver at center, and Ray Green at far right. Located on the southeast corner of Hill and Kelsey Streets, Monroe Union High School was dedicated on Sept. 1, 1911, with the first day of school on Sept. 5. The contract for construction placed the cost at $42,467. The building was condemned after the April 1965 earthquake and torn down that summer.
