Monroe Independence Day Celebration 1918Monroe's 1918 Independence Day Celebration centered around the dedication of the community's new 155-foot flagpole on West Main Street at Madison. A flagpole still stands at that location, although not the same one that was dedicated in 1918. It was first struck by lightening on July 15, 1924, and had to be shortened by 14 feet and reset in a new hole. Around 1960 it was cut down on Halloween by vandals. In 1918, the country was at war and the dedication was marked by the presence of U.S. Army Soldiers. Photo was taken looking east up Main Street toward downtown Monroe.
