Monroe Ladies Bowling Teams in 1941.Like many photos that are donated to the Monroe Historical Society, all we knew about this photo is what is written on it: Ladies Bowling Teams, 1941, Monroe, Wash. And the names of the teams, which were all Monroe businesses: White Spot, Sprau's Ice Cream, County Hospital, Rainbow Tavern. We also thought that the photo was not taken in Monroe as the first bowling alley we were aware of in Monroe was built in the 1950s by Paul Wagner in the building that recently housed Bob's Appliance Repair, east of the Chevron Station on the southeast corner of Main Street and US 2. But thanks to Joe Quaranta we now know this was taken at Duck Pin Bowling in downtown Monroe next to the White Spot on Main Street. It only had four lanes and used smaller bowling balls and pins than today. We also know three of the women are: Lala Riley, Lena Quaranta, and Anna Jane Scharf. If you can help identify any of the other women or give us any more information please send it to the Webmaster. Thank you! --Monroe Historical Society photo #1521. Return to Main Menu |
