The Great Depression Project

At right, women work at the Frye Lettuce Farm during the Depression.

Frye Lettuce Farm

The Great Depression was a remarkable period in our nation’s and the world’s history. The generation that grew up during that time was changed by it forever. They saw hard times, survived them and went on to fight World War II. Their memories are priceless, and we at the historical society want to capture as many of those stories as possible.

We would like everyone who lived in the Monroe area during the Great Depression or who now lives in the Monroe area and but lived through the Great Depression elsewhere to write down your memories and stories of that period, and please include photos and snapshots if you can. As a minimum all of these stories will be put together in notebooks for public access at the Museum. But we are hopeful that they will be published together in a bound volume that can be ordered by families and friends at a reasonable price.

Tell us about life in the country, in the city, family, friends, neighbors, work, fun, love, transportation, holidays, school, what you ate and drank, how you lived, etc. Even if you did not live in the Monroe area during the Depression we still want your memories and stories.

Please let us hear from you as we would like to complete this project next year. Send your stories, memories and photos to the Monroe Historical Society, P.O. Box 1044, Monroe, WA 98272.
