Monroe Historical Society selected for national museum assessment program

The Monroe Historical Society has been selected to participate in the national Museum Assessment Program (MAP). Through self-study and on-site consultation with
a museum professional, members of the Historical Society will learn how to better serve the citizens of Monroe through the historical museum in Old City Hall at 207 E. Main Street.

The MAP program is administered by the American Association of Museums through a cooperative agreement with the federal institute of Museum and Library Services.
Monroe applied to the program and was selected from over 100 applicants. Of America’s estimated 17,500 museums, less than one-half of one percent participates in MAP
each year.

MAP Surveyor June Sampson will meet with Historical Society board members Aug. 12 and 13 to collect information and assess the museum. A full report of her findings
will be sent to the museum in 12 weeks.

The Monroe Historical Society will use the assessment process to strengthen its operations and mission and to respond to community needs for local history and education.
It is planning a major fundraising campaign to renovate Old City Hall and create an expanded and updated museum facility to serve Monroe.

“Choosing to be part of the MAP program is an indication of the commitment to civic involvement, public service and overall excellence on the part of the Monroe Historical Society,” said Ford Bell, president of AAM. Since its creation in 1981, the MAP program has provided over 5,000 assessments for 3,500 museums.

The Monroe Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization formed in 1976. It opened its museum in 1982 in Monroe’s original two-story City Hall building on Main
Street
. The museum is home to a wide-ranging collection of local artifacts and resources including an extensive collection of historical photos. The Monroe Historical Society hosts
the Shannahan Cabin at the Evergreen State Fair each year and is sponsoring the Monroe Farmers Market each Tuesday this summer from 2 to 7 p.m. behind its museum building.
