Monroe City Hall Centennial celebrations Dec. 6 at museum and Dec. 16 at Tualco Grange

The Monroe Historical Society invites the community to celebrate the centennial of the 1908 Monroe City Hall Building at 207 E. Main
Street
. Two events are planned to commemorate the building’s 100-year history.

On Saturday, Dec. 6, birthday cake will be served at the museum during its normal operating hours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and free
informational tours of the building will be offered, including a chance to see the 1908 jail. On Tuesday, Dec. 16, the society’s quarterly membership
meeting will include a presentation on the building’s colorful history. Over the past 100 years, the building has served as
Monroe City Hall, City
Council chambers, Fire and Police Departments, town library, and later Evergreen District Court. In 1982, the Monroe Historical Society opened
he front two rooms of the building and its museum now occupies the old fire hall portion on the first floor.

An exhibit will cover the planning, construction, opening, first city council meeting and later significant building changes. Monroe residents
who worked in the building will also be invited to both events to share their memories. The free events are open to the public and all ages are
welcome. A potluck dinner and birthday cake will be served at the Dec. 16 membership meeting at 6:30 p.m. followed by the presentation at
7 p.m. Please bring a dish to share.

The meeting is at the Tualco Grange, 18933 Tualco Road. Copies of Monroe’s Fire Department History from 1900-1950 will be available
as well as other historical books, videos and DVDs for purchase.
